Used Laptops – Are They A Good Deal?
Sunday, April 26th, 2009 | Author: russ

The answer is Yes if you are a smart shopper. Finding a laptop that will meet your needs while at the same time saving you quite a sum of money is always a good thing. Buying a used or a refurbished laptop is a great option for many of us especially today with the economy the way it is right now.

There are a number of places to find used and refurbished laptops out there and probably the most common is here on the internet. eBay is my option for purchasing many items and I have had great results using them for many of my purchases. The computer that I am working on right now was purchased through eBay and I have no regrets with my purchase. There are many other sites out there that you can check Craigslist, Yahoo! shopping, Buy.com or you can do a Google search for used laptops and find sites which specialize in used and refurbished laptops as well.

I like eBay because there are many protection measures in place to assist you in making sure that you are dealing with an honorable person, nothing is fool proof however; but eBay does do a good job of filtering out a lot of these scammers that prey on the unwary shopper. Shop on craigslist and you are on your own! Also the Deals that you will find on eBay will generally beat any other deals on the internet today.

When buying a used laptop you should make sure that you ask some very important question from the buyer if they are not spelled out in their ads questions like:

  • Do they have a return policy?
  • Do they know of any problems with the laptop?
  • Is their still a warranty left on the laptop and is it transferable?
  • Is the battery still holding a charge or does it need a new one?
  • How much are they charging for shipping the laptop?
  • Do they still have the owners’ manuals for the laptop?

If you are wanting a laptop which is up to date on operating systems and have their accessories updated as well, you should look for refurbished laptops as many of these come with a complete upgrade with all the latest parts and accessories then they are tested even more vigorously then many of the new laptops making sure the operate correctly.

Buying a used laptops is a good way of saving some of your hard earned cash. Saving money is always the right way to shop or else it is just buying not shopping.

What to Look for to Find the Perfect Laptop
Friday, March 27th, 2009 | Author: russ

Refurbished laptopBuying a laptop, for me, came down to price more then any other factor, and as far as it having to last 4 years well that is highly unlikely in my opinion. With the way technology is moving today who knows what one will need to keep up with this technology at that time.

Aside from price one of the items you should be looking at is the efficiency laptopprocessor the speed and energy consumption. This is the #2 item that should play a roll in your decision in my opinion. After all you would like to have good performance and not be having to look for a power source all the time as some of the more powerful processors use a lot of your power that’s stored in the battery. Intel’s Pentium M CPU line offers speed while enabling great battery life. I believe the Intel Centrino is the best choice for a processor because, this processor is best at balancing performance and battery life.

The next item that I would look at is the storage capacities of its hard drive just make sure it will hold the information you plan on inputting. Video and media files will use a lot of memory while word docs and spread sheets will use considerably less space. I like to use this simple rule of thumb video and media need a min of 100 GB hard drive while word docs and spread sheets you will be fine with a 40 GB hard drive if you will be working with photos you may want something somewhere in the middle. At the same time keep in mind that media and video files need to have a larger amount of RAM memory to function properly you should have a minimum of 1 GB RAM memory for this type of file handling.

When using a laptop you normally do not use a mouse instead you use what is known as a touchpad which is a square-shaped surface located below the space bar of a laptop keyboard. It is touch-sensitive and you navigate the screen by moving your finger around the box, as if you were drawing. A touchpad with four-way integrated scroll button can also be very helpful.

laptop ScreenA 15.1″ display is very nice, but you pay for it in extra pounds. On the other hand, a 12.1″ screen may limit what you can see. Screen size is measured diagonally, just as with televisions. However, unlike a TV, larger is not always better, because larger screens normally run at higher resolutions.

If you are purchasing a laptop for a student who finds computers to be useful and valuable in school and during summer employment as clerks for law firms, courts, and government agencies. You should also know in order to take advantage of an option to write final examinations using a computer-based examination application; students must have either a built-in CD drive, or an external USB CD drive. Students can also purchase Microsoft software at a substantial discount from a supplier like Campus Tech and others.

Computer bags come in various styles and qualities. Usually the bag that comes with the computer is of the lower quality and will fall apart quickly. You may want to keep this in mind if you are sending a student off to school with this laptop or you plan on hauling it around a lot.

Computer companies and resellers have varying warranties and service plans for laptops. Some companies have you send your laptop back if anything goes wrong, some want you to take it to a service depot (which may be inconveniently located up to 100 miles away), and others will come to your home or business and repair it on the spot.

These are just some of the items I like to check out when purchasing a new laptop I’ve never been one to be influence by the brand name as I have found that they all have good and bad points, it just depends on what you prefer and what you will be using your laptop for that should be the deciding factors.

You now have a laptop with all kind of new features but you are not sure on how to access them or get the most out of them. Don’t threat over it with today’s technology you can have answers in minutes.

Many of today’s laptop manufacturers publish their user manuals on line and are easily downloaded to your laptop in minutes. So how do you find these manuals well there are several ways you can locate them.

  1. You can do a Google search just type in your make and model followed by manual.
  2. You can go to the manufacturers’ home page and do a search for your models manual.
  3. You could even contact the seller that you bought your laptop from and see if the will send you all the information they had on this particular laptop.

Key board connectors

Having access to the user manulals will give you the answers to many of you questions. Maybe you are not familar with the differnet types of port or where they are located these are explained and their location will be displayed right there for you to look at.They will also explain where specail keys are located and what function they perform.

You have the user manual but you still can not find what you are looking for well relax you may not have gotten any support when you purchased the used laptop but you do have the internet Right? So get on line a do a search for forums under the make and model of your laptop and you now have access to a whole array of individuals who are normally ready and willing to help you out.

Did you know that many of the leading companies now have a full time staff and their responsible for monitoring these forums and assisting with providing answers to your questions? This is not a well known fact and the way I learned about it was from a friend of mine who is a true computer geek; and that is what he does for a living. I don’t want to mention who he is working for as the company tries to keep this quite, how else can they promote there extended support packages if they let every one know they can have the same information for free.

You might ask why they do this. Well the answer is they are trying to keep people happy with their laptops so they do not start telling every one how bad that the X-brand laptops are and taking credibility away from their product line. Keeping their laptop owners satisfied with their laptop is some of the best advertising that money will buy and they know this.

So just remember that you saved hundreds and you may have to do a little research, but with a few minutes work you can have the same information as if you were to have bought a new laptop.

Selecting Standard Features for a Refurbished Laptop
Friday, December 26th, 2008 | Author: russ

Once you’ve decided on a laptop weight class and processor. It is time to look at other components. This will insure that you have a refurbished laptop that meets all of your needs. The following list is some of the main features that you will want to make sure your laptop can handle your workload. While here, we are recommending the minimum requirements you can always improve your laptops performance by exceeding these recommendations.

Hard Drive:
A computer’s hard drive stores all your programs and files. A drive with a higher storage capacity (measured in GB) lets you save more data than a drive with a lower storage capacity. You only need 20GB to 40GB of hard drive space if you only plan to store your operating system, programs, documents, and a few photos. You’ll want at least 80GB if you plan to save a lot of large files such as high-resolution images, movies, or your entire music collection. Additional external hard drives also work well for data backup purposes and for storing large files.

Memory (RAM):
Programs, including operating systems, need a certain amount of memory (RAM) to run, with more RAM providing better performance. For example, Windows XP requires at least 128MB RAM to run according to Microsoft. Most people find the number closer to 256MB and see even better performance with 512MB RAM, 1GB RAM, or more.

CD and DVD Drives:
When you buy any computer you want a way to back up your work. Some laptops come with fixed internal drives while others have a hot-swap bay where you can insert and remove a CD drive, DVD drive, or combo drive. Combo drives can read or write to two media formats. They may also include a read-only media format such as CD-ROM (to read CDs) or DVD-ROM (to play DVD movies and read CD-RWs). With hot-swap bays you can always upgrade to a different drive (for example, from a CD burner to a DVD burner) later and you can sometimes use an extra battery with the bay.

Ports:
Make sure you have the ability to connect all the peripherals and gadgets you want. Besides a parallel or USB port for your printer, you’ll want USB 2.0 or FireWire to connect your MP3 player, digital camera, or camcorder. Many devices also work with USB 1.1.

Screens:
While most folks will love a 14.1-inch display, some people may want to sacrifice size to drop some laptop weight. If you work with a lot of multimedia or play 3D games, go with a larger display.

Networking and Wi-Fi:
If you want to connect to the Internet from more than one location in your home or office, find out if the laptop has built-in Ethernet support, a PCMCIA network interface card, or Wi-Fi (802.11b or 802.11g) support. For more information on wired and wireless networking, visit eBay’s Networking Buying Guide.

Graphics Card:
A graphics card processes video, freeing up memory (RAM) for other system tasks.

Laptop Upgrades Although a laptop’s small size makes it a bit trickier to upgrade than a desktop, even new computer users will feel comfortable:

Adding memory:
Laptop memory upgrades don’t cost a lot of money and most people can replace a RAM stick in a couple minutes. In order to run Windows XP Home, Microsoft recommends you have 128MB RAM. However, Windows seems a lot happier with 512MB RAM, or more.

Inserting a new hot swap drive (if your laptop supports them). Installing a new PCMCIA card. Some laptops have an Ethernet or modem card in the PCMCIA slot, but if you have an open card slot, you can quickly add USB 2.0, FireWire, an Ethernet port, or Wi-Fi.

When purchasing a refurbished laptop today most laptops will meet or exceed these requirements, however it is always a good idea to make sure that at least these minimum standards come with your refurbished laptop. Adding additional RAM memory is perhaps the best way to improve a laptops performance so again make sure your refurbished laptop has enough Ram memory, Or at least think about adding additional memory to assure you of a top performing laptop computer.
